Sultan Youngsters - Beach Football Winners

The Royal Navy Football Association hosted a Beach Soccer Tournament on Wed 26 Jul 17 on the glorious sandy beaches of the Weymouth Coast. The event was well received by RN/RM personnel with 7 teams entering the competition which was run on a league and cup basis

Teams consisted of various ships and establishment from the Eastern and Western Regions, including HMS SULTAN, DARING, ALBION, RNAS YEOVILTON, 846 Naval Air Squadron, Viking Squadron and even HMS OCEANS’s Ship’s Company that entered the competition despite being on summer leave – BZ HMS OCEAN!

The league was played in great style with some classic skills on show by all teams! The RNFA Officials, Commodore Rupert Wallace and AB Binks provided some excellent refereeing displays, ensuring the games continued to flow in a controlled manner. HMS ALBION proved to have the extra edge and ended up winning the league on goal difference to HMS OCEAN. Next was the knockout stages and against all odds, the young trainees from HMS SULTAN, who ended up finishing 6th in the league, turn the heat up by scoring some tremendous goals to reach the final against HMS ALBION! All was to play for in the final with the general public crowd gathering strongly for what was to be a Beach Football Pensunique showdown! HMS ALBION were the clear bookmakers favourites, however, the baby sailors from HMS SULTAN took the wind out of their sales and held them to a 0-0 draw after full time taking the final to a sudden death penalty shoot-out. The nerves and tension could clearly be felt by all watching the event with many describing the feeling to that experienced when watching England v Germany in Euro 96! Jubilant scenes were then witnessed as the young guns from HMS SULTAN, achieved the impossible and won the Cup on penalties, before running into the sea and celebrating like they had just won the Euromillions! A joyous occasion for the Sultan team all of which had been in the RN just a mere 14 weeks!

Many thanks goes out to all teams that entered the competition in what was a great day all round. The RNFA will be returning to Weymouth Beach for the summer of 2018 for another Beach Soccer Tournament. To stay in touch with all upcoming events, check out the Facebook page and website,
