Navy Women Fight Back For The Share Of The Spoils

The 2nd RN Ladies fixture of the 2018 Inter Services took place at HMS Temeraire on Tue 20 Mar 18. Both teams paid their respects through a one minutes silence in regards to the tragic news of the loss of an RAF Engineer in the earlier flying accident.

The game started off in a competitive manner with both sides trying to take control of the game. The RAF gained momentum and off an early corner managed to take the lead after a goal mouth scramble. Within 5 minutes of the re-start they had doubled their lead as the RAF looked to push on and put the game beyond the RN after only 20 minutes. Not to be deterred the RN composed themselves and stuck to their game plan and began to assert themselves. A long range RN shot on 32 minutes took a heavy deflection off an RAF defender but fell kindly to the RN Captain, Nat Bavister who had found herself some space between the RAF defenders and  made no mistake from the penalty area to make the score 2-1. From here on in the RN took full control and pushed for an equalizer before half time. After several waves of attack the RN got their reward, clever play down the right hand side lead to a low cross being delivered from LNN Rosie McDonnell following some exquisite footwork and after a clever first touch by Annie Timoney scored the RN's 2nd goal to bring the score level a minute before half time.

Although this was the last goal, the 2nd half was far from dull. The RAF tried to bring the physical side to the game and disrupt the RN's clever game plan of keeping the ball moving and high pressure tactics. The RN were unlucky not to get a deserved winner as the RAF goalkeeper saved 2 one on ones. Unfortunately RN could not capitalize on some good wide play which resulted in crosses going begging with only the keeper to beat. With arguably the RN's best performance of the season, honors were shared in a 2-2 draw the Lindsey Miller Trophy was presented to both captains.
